HAIR: BASIC CARE (INTRODUCTION)

There is nothing wrong with washing your hair daily—the old belief that you'll ruin your hair is just a myth. Because hair is an insoluble protein, it does not dissolve in soap or water. You can ruin your hair, however, by treating it improperly while it's wet. Never brush your hair while it's wet—remove tangles with a wide-toothed comb, never stretching or tugging your hair. The worst possible thing you can do to your hair is to "tease" it or "backbrush" it, tugging against the hair's natural direction. Here's why: Hair is like a cable with many wires inside. The outer hair, called the cortex, is like a film of shingles laid down carefully on the hair. Hair normally has luster because the shingles lie flat. If you disturb that normal position, through perms, curling, teasing and so on, you cause those shingles to stand up, making it easier to break or harm the hair.

There's also nothing wrong with brushing your hair every day, but the old myth that you need a hundred strokes a day is just that—a myth. Overbrushing, even when the hair is dry, pulls out hairs that would have stayed in the head for several weeks longer.
