As I mentioned, there are several over-the-counter remedies for yeast infections—such as Monistat and Gyne Lotrimin. These have the same ingredients as some prescription treatments, at a reduced cost. Over-the counter preparations are helpful for generally benign, rare-to-occasional yeast infections. They may not be strong enough for more potent yeast infections, however, in which case a tougher prescription yeast medicine could be necessary. Terazol is a favorite of some clinicians because of its excellent coverage of several strains of yeast.
Be sure to take your yeast medication for the full length of time—and amount—prescribed. If you stop as soon as you feel better but before you've finished your dose, the yeast is more likely to grow back—stronger! It's the old survival of the fittest rule come back to haunt you.
