The challenge for the surgeon who performs breast reductions is to keep blood supply to the breast ample, so that you will have sensation in the breasts after they are reduced in size. Rarely, nerve damage or lack of blood supply can make this impossible—but in cases where nerves are cut but not severed, the sensation of numbness can subside over a period of time. A worst-case scenario occurs when blood supply to the nipple is completely lost, and the nipple cannot be replaced—but this isn't common. Should it happen, nipples can be re-created from skin grafts as is done with breast reconstruction surgery. A much happier and not uncommon result is that the nipple is not only preserved but, if you and your surgeon plan it this way, your ability to breast-feed in the future is fully retained.
Breast reduction surgery is usually done under general anesthesia and carries the same basic surgical risks of infection that other major surgery entails. If your reduction is quite minor, you may be able to have it done under local anesthesia.
