WHEN TO HAVE A MAMMOGRAM: AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY GUIDELINES (Note: As discussed earlier, the National Cancer Institute has eliminated the recommendation for women under 50; but because other groups and experts are keeping it in place, I have chosen to include it here.) Have a "baseline" mammogram at age 40. This is a mammogram to be used for the purpose of comparison—and although it is of questionable value if your breasts change dramatically between age 35 and 40, it still provides basic information about your breast tissue that can be referred to later if a suspicious lesion appears. Between age 40 and 49, have a mammogram every one to two years. If you are considered to be at high risk of breast cancer, your clinician may favor every year; if not, every two years may be fine for you. Age 50-plus, have a mammogram every year. Don't forget!
