SOME OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR ACR ACCREDITED MAMMOGRAPHY CENTERS
The physician supervising and/or interpreting the mammograms must either be certified by the American Board of Radiology, the American Osteopathic Board of Radiology or the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada or must have certain documented minimum training in mammography and certain related areas.
The physician must read a minimum of 480 mammograms per year and must maintain records on the results.
The radiation technologists who perform the tests must be certified by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology or have the equivalent state license, plus continuing education.
There are more requirements for ACR accreditation, including restrictions on the type of equipment to be used, quality control and dosing. Overall, while the requirements do not guarantee safety and effectiveness, they certainly help increase your chance of getting a good result. You can ask your mammography center to show proof of accreditation—or, if you're more comfortable this way, call the ACR at (703) 648-8900 and ask for the name of an accredited center near you.
