GETTING THE BEST RESULTS FROM YOUR MAMMOGRAM Not all mammography centers are alike, and unfortunately there are bad ones as well as good. A number of factors can make a center less reliable, including everything from the quality of the machinery used to the technician performing the test to the person who reads the test result. The patient herself can make a difference in getting a good picture of the breast, which we'll discuss in a moment. Recently, the U.S. government issued several guidelines for quality control in mammography centers, including the requirement, for example, that the mammography machines are used solely for the purpose of breast screening—that is, the requirement that centers use "dedicated" mammography machines. But many feel the government's guidelines don't go far enough, even though several thousand U.S. mammography centers will have to upgrade to meet their requirement. More complete quality assurance comes from voluntary accreditation by the American College of Radiologists. Centers do not have to become accredited, but those that choose to do so must meet certain standards; a few of those requirements are listed below. *210/162/1* General health |
