CONTROVERSY OVER THE EFFECTIVENESS OF MAMMOGRAPHY IN YOUNGER WOMEN - DIFFERENT RECOMMENDATION ABOUT MAMMOGRAPHY The controversy is equally frustrating in Canada, where each province has a slightly different recommendation about mammography for younger women; some parts of the country endorse and pay for it, some don't. Dr. Linda Warren, executive director of the screening mammography program for British Columbia, also argues that the studies on this subject have been seriously flawed, and that the best information we can go on is the work being done in screening centers that catch early cancers in young women—thus saving their lives—every day. So what's an intelligent woman to do—let alone believe? One survey showed that a large percentage of women would continue having mammography at a young age "just to be safe" regardless of a change in official recommendations. But for those who aren't sure, let's look at some data. About one-quarter of the breast cancers found at a given breast imaging center will be in women aged 40-49—so we know this population is at risk, albeit at lower risk than women over 50. We also know that most—about three-fourths—of breast cancers occur in women with no identifiable risk factors—in other words, they're a mystery, and could not have been anticipated.
