CONTROVERSY OVER THE EFFECTIVENESS OF MAMMOGRAPHY IN YOUNGER WOMEN - TOP EXPERTS IN MAMMOGRAPHY Dr. Steven Feig, director of the breast imaging center at Philadelphia's Thomas Jefferson University Hospital and a major proponent of mammography, was an adviser to one of these questionable studies, which was carried out in Canada. The study used less-than-optimal mammography machines and techniques, he argues, and may also have been designed poorly in the first place. While members of the Canadian study have acknowledged that there were problems early in the study, they claim that those problems were eliminated later on. But Dr. Feig's analysis of the data late in the study found that 75% of the mammograms were of inadequate quality. How can we possibly tell women aged 40-49, he asks, that mammography won't save their lives, when the data we're basing it on has serious problems? A number of other top experts in mammography have echoed his concerns, expressing anger over the fact that the NCI would base its decision on flawed studies.
