CONTROVERSY OVER THE EFFECTIVENESS OF MAMMOGRAPHY IN YOUNGER WOMEN (CARE AND PREVENTION) Dr. Suzanne Fletcher, professor of ambulatory care and prevention at Harvard Medical School and chair of the NCI international workshop on screening for breast cancer, argues that not only is mammography for younger women of unproven benefit, but it also can bring about a good deal of personal harm to younger women. She points to the extremely large number of younger women who will be sent for unnecessary invasive procedures, such as needle biopsies of the breast, due to inconclusive mammograms (a more common problem in younger women than in older women). She also points to studies showing the extreme emotional distress experienced by women who were told they might have breast cancer, even if the disease was later ruled out by further testing. The fact is, she says, women hear breast cancer, and they worry. But a large number of leading scientists and researchers are outraged by the NCI's backing off of the mammography recommendation for younger women.
