CONTROVERSY OVER THE EFFECTIVENESS OF MAMMOGRAPHY IN YOUNGER WOMEN (GETTING REGULAR MAMMOGRAMS)
A more recent deterrent to getting regular mammograms may be connected to the controversy over mammography's effectiveness in younger women. Let me bring you up to date. For many years, both the American Cancer Society and the National Cancer Institute have recommended mammography every one to two years for women aged 40-49, and every year for women 50 and over. Recendy, the National Cancer Institute removed its recommendation for the 40-49 age group, saying that there was not conclusive evidence that mammography was useful in these younger women. The NCI does not now say that women 40-49 should not have the test: it just stopped saying they should have the test (which was enough to make major headlines, and stir lots of confusion among women of all ages). This change in recommendations from a large, respected organization—and the fact that the same change was not endorsed by other highly regarded groups—was terribly confusing for women.
