Holding the phone in the crook of the same side of your neck is also a bad idea. Try switching sides if your neck and shoulders ache—or better yet, get a headset that doesn't require any neck acrobatics at all!
Another common way to get shoulder overuse problems. Dr. Hannafin adds, is to use a computer keyboard that's too high up, so your elbows are lifted all day long. When your elbows are lifted, your shoulder muscles become strained. Drop your hands into your lap and see how much better your shoulders feel. Then either raise your chair or lower your keyboard to a point where your shoulders are completely relaxed.
If you have deep, aching pain inside your shoulders that flares up when you comb your hair or perform similar activities, you may have developed chronic problems from overhead lifting (such as putting things on a high shelf repeatedly). What may be going on is that your big outer shoulder muscles, called the deltoids are developing an imbalance with your deep inner muscles, called the rotator cuff muscles. Often the inner muscles aren't strong enough to keep up with the outer ones. A little fluid-filled sac called the bursa that sits inside this region can become inflamed and painful; this is called bursitis. This problem is especially common in women in their 50s and 60s. The solution: strengthen and stretch your rotator cuff muscles.
