WHY AREN'T WE COMMUNICATING? WHOSE FAULT IS IT, ANYWAY? (INTRODUCTION)
An increasing number of studies are looking at the specific dynamics of the doctor-patient relationship and they're turning up answers to the question of where communication falls short. One study found that, on average, doctors are interrupting patients after about 18 seconds of conversation. Before the patient can get all of her points on the table, she is steered in another direction by the doctor-interviewer. Instead of having a mutual conversation, the doctor is driving the discussion, and the result is the patient gets cut off. Sound familiar? Certainly, to some degree the "expert" must keep the conversation on course and use the available time to get to the essence of a patient's problem. But that's exactly what isn't happening. By interrupting patients too soon, doctors are stopping them from ever getting their worries or problems out in the open.
Interruptions, lack of empathy for emotional needs and a disease-focused rather than patient-centered approach to health care add up to poor doctor-patient communication and, more important, poor health outcomes.
