LOCATING AND RESISTING BIAS IN WOMEN'S HEALTH CARE (INTRODUCTION)

As we know only too well, generic discrimination against women is old news. It was only 70 years ago that we got the vote, after all. We're still paid less for comparable work, and sexual harassment is a part of life in many workplaces. But the fact that it's common doesn't make it acceptable. More than half the battle is recognizing it, especially when it's subtle.

Discrimination comes in many forms. Sometimes it's blatant: for instance, a woman will come into the doctor's office complaining about dizziness and chest pain and she'll be told she's under stress, it's all in her head; she may be given a tranquilizer, told to calm down and go home. A man comes in with similar symptoms and is thoroughly tested for heart disease. Sound outrageous? It's not uncommon. This might be more understandable if heart disease was uncommon in women. In fact, it's the leading killer of women! Every time a woman reports faintness, shortness of breath, chest pain or other related symptoms, heart disease should be one of the things that jumps into the clinician's mind. The hackneyed image of the perspiring damsel in distress should have no place in the doctor's office. But those stereotypes won't die unless you insist that they do.
