VAGINAL SPONGE (TODAY'S SPONGE) - BARRIER METHODS FOR WOMEN: THE SPONGE, THE DIAPHRAGM, THE CERVICAL CAP AND THE FEMALE CONDOM
The barrier methods are so named because they form an actual barrier (the device) inside the vagina, in front of the cervix.
Since the sponge contains spermicide (the same ingredient, nonoxynol-9, that's in most spermicidal foams and jellies) it can cause some of the same irritations (rare) fl«d provides limited protection against certain sexually transmitted diseases.
An important caution about sponge use is that you should not leave the device in for more than 24 hours. While no one knows the exact time line for risk, it's thought that leaving it in too long will increase your chance of getting toxic shock syndrome (TSS), which you may have heard is connected to excessively long tampon use. The point is, when you leave any absorbent object in the vagina for too long, you run the risk of trapping dangerous bacteria that can cause any number of infections, including TSS.
How the Sponge Works.
The sponge partially blocks the cervix, keeping sperm from gaining entry to the uterus; the spermicide in the sponge kills sperm.
